MALAYSIA AIRPORTS Holdings Bhd Senior General Manager for Operation Services Azmi Murad held a media briefing recently on the ongoing upgrading works being carried out at KL International Airport.
Some RM135 million is allocated for the programme which includes upgrading facilites to accommodate the Airbus A380,the world’s largest commercial aircraft.
Among the works are the building of shoulders on both sides of the two existing runways as well as the taxiways; installation of additional aerobridges at the three departure halls, namely C17,C27 and C37; and enhancement of the mezzanine lounges for upper deck passengers of the aircraft at the departure halls. All works are scheduled to be completed by May next year.
The airport’s facilities are also being improved. Since July 1, a “countdown†system has been introduced for passengers’ baggage handling, both for international and domestic flights. Under the system, a display tells passengers the exact time taken for their bags to arrive at the baggage carousel from the aircraft.
Another interesting new feature at KLIA is the “family†lane at the Immigration section where comfortable seats are provided along the aisle.
This thoughtful and passenger-friendly feature allows the head of the family alone to deal with immigration matters with members of his entourage being spared having to crowd around the counter.
